Job Description

BAE Systems is seeking an experienced Data Engineer to work with an experienced systems engineer to architect a knowledge management and data integration solution for the Sentinel system. The ideal candidate will recognize that they must create both a technology architecture and an organizational topology to solve this problem. The position requires knowledge of big data architecture and solution design, as well as experience with data lakes/lake houses, graph-based databases, data meshes, and knowledge graphs. Must be willing to propose and prototype well thought out solutions to highly complex and integrated problems. This is a strategic role, and candidates must have the right background to set a successful strategy and create policy/governance to enact a cultural change in the way this DoD program manages data.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Develop skills to do Digital Engineering/Digital Threading of requirements, design, manufacturing, and test data for the Sentinel system
  • Incorporate unstructured data from traditional data artifacts such as PDFs, Word, Excel documents, and CAD drawings, with modern structured data from SQL databases, commercial applications, and real-time data feeds
  • Work with data stewards and subject matter experts to craft a community and standards-based approach to data governance, data engineering, and data integration
  • Conceptualize and communicate a metadata ontology for use in the data mesh

Required Education, Experience, & Skills
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience (8+ years with a Master's degree in Data/Software Engineering or Computer Science)
  • Experience with systems engineering or software architecting process, and associated tools, especially Cameo, SysML, UML, etc.
  • Experience developing or working with data ontologies
  • Experience architecting, building, and/or maintaining a data warehouse, data lake, data mesh, or other big data solution
  • Ability to elicit, understand, and distill customer requirements to technical specifications
  • Active DoD Secret Security Clearance adjudicated within the last six (6) years and the ability to obtain and maintain any necessary Special Program Access



Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
  • Self-motivated and works well under minimal supervision
  • Communication skills (written or verbal), including the ability to help others understand tools, technologies, and processes used to solve a problem
  • Experience engineering design or manufacturing
  • Coding experience in Python, SQL, C#, or a graph query language such as GraphQL or Cypher
  • Superior organizational skills and an affinity for detail
  • Willingness to recommend solutions to improve new and existing database systems


Pay Information
Full-Time Salary Range: $103590 - $176130

Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
