Job Description Summary:

Founded in 1964, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) is a private, independent, nonprofit institution that provides engineering leadership in service to the nation. The mission of the National Academy of Engineering is to advance the well-being of the nation by promoting a vibrant engineering profession and by marshalling the expertise and insights of eminent engineers to provide independent advice to the federal government on matters involving engineering and technology. The NAE is tasked with identifying and illuminating issues at the intersections of engineering, technology, and society that impact our quality of life.

The NAE has more than 2,600 peer-elected members and international members, approximately 56 percent from academia, 36 percent from industry, and 8 percent from nonprofit institutions and government. They serve as members of research and study committees, plan and conduct symposia and workshops, and assist in the work of the Academy in many other ways. Activities include collaborative projects at home and abroad to examine technological problems, advising Congress and government agencies on engineering-related matters of national importance, and recognizing and honoring outstanding engineers for their contributions.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Director, Membership is responsible for the leadership and effective operations of the National Academy of Engineering’s activities related to membership. Directs the processes for election of members; develops and directs the programs and special initiatives for members; and identifies web-based tools to support effective data collection and analysis, communications, and member engagement. In support of the home secretary, stewards development and maintenance of policies and standards that assure the transparency, integrity, and quality of membership elections and engagement. Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information. Works closely with the president, executive officer, home secretary, member leaders and other office and activity directors of the NAE. Directs all activities of the Membership office; responsible for staff of 5 employees. As a member of the NAE staff leadership team works with the executive officer, directors of programs, outreach & communications, meetings & events, finance, and development to ensure the smooth operation of the organization.

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTEIS

1. Directs membership programs, projects and activities. Supports the president and leadership in policymaking, and planning activities. Participates in the development of strategic plans, communications, and tactical direction to achieve the Academy’s objectives. Ensures implementation of adopted policies and procedures are communicated and coordinated across Membership office functions. Has fiscal responsibility for preparing related budgets and monitoring costs.

2. Provides overall supervision of the membership election processes and the membership committee selection process; develops policies and procedures and recommends changes as necessary. Is the interface with the home secretary and as such interacts regularly with home secretary, membership committee chairs and section chairs/vice chairs. Serves as primary staff officer for the Membership Policy Committee, develops agendas and prepares meeting minutes. Prepares reports to council and membership at-large.

3. Manages and oversees all financial and administrative issues for the membership office. Establishes office policies and procedures. Provides leadership and mentors employees. Trains and develops employees to successfully perform current responsibilities and encourages development of staff for future roles. Forms effective teams and cultivates a work environment that fosters teamwork. Interprets and ensures consistent application of organizational policies. Initiates personnel actions, including performance and compensation reviews and disciplinary actions.

4. Works in consultation with all NAE offices to ensure regular, smooth, and effective member communications efforts, including members-only website design and content, annual membership directory, and collateral materials for meetings.

5. Directs member services such as:

  • Member relations – in consultation with the home secretary, president, and executive officer, work to encourage member awareness of and engagement in Academies work, including the NAE/NRC liaison program, surveys, communications, database queries, and coordination with section leaders.

  • Special activities – development of member-related content on the NAE website, other supporting activities of the 12 sections including elections and written operation manuals, and oversight of the NAE member Memorial Tributes

  • The membership team actively supports the director of meetings and events, including for the Annual, National and Regional meetings.

6. Directs membership dues assessment and collection, and new activities as requested. Oversees development and maintenance of monitoring mechanisms, member communications, data collection and statistical/trend analysis.

7. Directs collection, maintenance, and analysis of membership data. Directs administration of electronic and paper-based systems to store and retrieve membership data. Exercises leadership, with the joint Academies users and technology group, in the development, maintenance, and utilization of the membership database to ensure data integrity and quality and to ensure continued development to meet evolving needs.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to develop and foster effective working relationships with member volunteers as well as individual members. Excellent customer service skills. Ability to manage and maintain privileged, sensitive, and confidential information and matters appropriately. Ability to solve intellectual problems of substantial complexity and variety using originality and ingenuity. Ability to operate using substantial latitude for independent judgment and actions. Experience working in complex environments with a high degree of organizational effectiveness. Ability to train and develop staff. Ability to work successfully in a team environment and to form and maintain effective teams. Ability to develop relationships with co-workers, members and employees in other National Academies’ departments through effective communication. Excellent written and verbal skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or equivalent knowledge.

Minimum Experience: Eight years of related professional experience, four of which were in a supervisory capacity.

Physical Capabilities: Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: None.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Reports to Executive Director/Officer. Independently establishes goals and objectives. Supervises membership staff.

Compensation Range: The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine support equity, fairness, and transparency in our compensation programs. An estimated compensation range for this position is $101,130 - $158,015. Compensation offered to the selected candidate will be based on the candidate’s relevant knowledge, skills, and work experience, commensurate with compensation of current employees in comparable positions with similar knowledge, skills, and work experience, and subject to budget parameters. Note it is not typical for a candidate to be hired at the higher end of the range. This is a benefits-eligible position. Work Environment: Hybrid Office/Telecommute environment, expected onsite percentage 40%, with occasional travel between National Academies’ facilities and to off-site meeting/sponsor locations.
