Job Description Summary:

This job, pay band 5, reports to the Senior Managing Editor. The Managing Editor, Publication Ethics, is a senior staff member responsible for managing all aspects of journal ethics and providing leadership and direction to the editorial team. Incumbent establishes, updates, and maintains the journal's scientific integrity policy and serves as a public spokesperson regarding ethics-related matters for PNAS; receives and evaluates instances of potential scientific misconduct as relates to manuscripts submitted to and/or published in PNAS; screens for potential ethics violations; and works with stakeholders to resolve ethics-related questions. This position requires a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within the sciences.

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Serve as the journal ombudsman as relates to ethical questions and complaints
  • Establish and revise policies and procedures related to ethical issues. Respond to inquiries regarding journal policy.
  • Establish and maintain scientific standards for digital image manipulation screening
  • Track, monitor, and train specialists screening for ethics violations
  • Review and resolve prepublication image issues
  • Receive and investigate reports of undisclosed conflicts of interest, image manipulation, or other ethical violations, including those related to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Confer with scientific experts to rectify disagreements about data interpretation or access
  • Manage ethics-related corrections and retractions as necessary
  • Work with stakeholders to adjudicate any other ethical complaints or allegations
  • Compiles ethics-related benchmarks and statistics
  • Supervisory responsibilities may include one or more direct reports, including evaluating workload and assigning projects, preparing procedures for daily tasks, and providing leadership and mentoring employees.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Background in scientific peer-review procedures
  • Ability to solve intellectual problems of appreciable variety and complexity, using latitude for independent judgment and action
  • Ability to work successfully in a team environment and to form and maintain effective teams
  • Ability to develop relationships with co-workers and employees in other National Academies’ departments through effective communication
  • Excellent communication skills with proven ability to interact effectively with employees at all levels
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel
  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time


Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or related field, or equivalent knowledge.
Minimum Experience: Six years of related professional experience.
Physical Capabilities: Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.
Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: None.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Reports to Director. General direction is provided. Supervises staff and freelance personnel.
Compensation Range: The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine support equity, fairness, and transparency in our compensation programs. An estimated compensation range for this position is $88,450 - $121,620. Compensation offered to the selected candidate will be based on the candidate’s relevant knowledge, skills, and work experience, commensurate with compensation of current employees in comparable positions with similar knowledge, skills, and work experience, and subject to budget parameters. Note it is not typical for a candidate to be hired at the higher end of the range. This is a benefits-eligible position. Work Environment: This role has been approved for 100% remote status, with occasional travel between National Academies’ facilities and to off-site meeting/sponsor locations.
